One room. Two very different temperatures. A surprisingly lively debate about which one you should enter first.

Welcome to contrast therapy: the practice of alternating between heat and cold. At Simple Float in Dubai, that means an infrared sauna and cold-plunge baths. It is an experience people often find invigorating—but it doesn't need to become a test of bravery.

What is contrast therapy?

Contrast therapy combines periods of warming up with periods of cooling down. You'll hear about it in sports recovery conversations, sauna communities and increasingly among people who just enjoy trying something different.

The contrast is the experience: warmth can feel soothing; cold can feel sharp and alerting. Some people enjoy that switch. Others need a little time to understand why anyone would do this voluntarily.

Infrared sauna versus a traditional sauna

A traditional sauna primarily warms the surrounding air, which then heats your body. An infrared sauna uses radiant heaters that transfer energy directly to the body and nearby surfaces, often operating at lower air temperatures than a traditional sauna.

Neither is automatically better for everyone. Comfort, exposure time and individual tolerance matter more than trying to win an imaginary sauna championship.

What is a cold plunge?

A cold plunge means entering cold water for a controlled period. A cold shower can provide a gentler introduction, but an immersion bath changes how much of your body is exposed at once.

Cold water can trigger a rapid breathing response and changes in heart rate and blood pressure. That is why beginners should approach it gradually rather than jumping straight into an extreme challenge.

Does switching hot and cold help recovery?

People report feeling refreshed or relaxed after contrast sessions. Research into cold-water immersion for exercise recovery is mixed and depends on the outcome, timing, training type and protocol. It's not accurate to say that a single temperature routine speeds every kind of recovery.

For example, regularly using cold immersion immediately after resistance training may reduce some muscle-growth adaptations. If building muscle is your priority, timing matters. See a systematic review.

Contrast therapy can still be a rewarding wellness experience without promising that it repairs muscles, boosts immunity or solves stress overnight.

What should a first-timer expect?

Start with your comfort level. Tell the team if it's your first visit and ask about the session format.

Warm up comfortably. You don't need to remain in the sauna just to prove you can. Leave if you feel light-headed, unwell or overheated.

Approach the cold calmly. Enter carefully and give your breathing time to settle. Never force breath-holding in the water.

Rest between transitions. The session is about deliberate contrast, not rushing.

Hydrate and listen to your body. Stop when something doesn't feel right.

We deliberately don't prescribe one universal number of minutes or degrees here. The safest approach depends on the person, and your team can explain the actual setup before a visit.

Who should check with a doctor first?

Cold and heat exposure can place stress on the cardiovascular system. If you have heart or blood-pressure conditions, are pregnant, feel unwell, or have another relevant medical concern, get appropriate medical advice first. Avoid sessions while intoxicated or dehydrated.

Can you do contrast therapy together?

Yes—Simple Float has a contrast space with an infrared sauna and cold-plunge facilities, making it an option for couples or friends who prefer company when entering cold water. Moral support is useful. Competitive dares are not required.
