Floating vs Massage: Two Very Different Ways to Unwind

Sometimes you want somebody to work the tension out of your shoulders. Other times you want the entire world to leave you alone for an hour.

That, in a nutshell, is floating vs massage.

Both can be relaxing. Both involve lying down. But the similarity ends sooner than you might expect.

What happens during a massage?

A trained therapist uses hands-on techniques to work with muscles and soft tissues. Pressure, pace and focus can be adjusted to your comfort and the massage being offered.

For people who enjoy touch and want attention to specific areas of everyday tension, massage can feel particularly satisfying. Communication matters: if the pressure is uncomfortable, say so.

What happens during floating?

You lie in warm water saturated with Epsom salt. The buoyancy keeps you afloat and the environment minimizes distractions.

There is no therapist working on your body and no need to follow instructions. Floating is more about being supported and spending time without much external stimulation.

Your brain may use this quiet to unwind. Or it may choose to revisit an awkward conversation from 2018. Both are allowed.

Which is better for stress?

There's no universal winner. Some people relax best through hands-on bodywork. Others love the unusual quiet and weightless sensation of floating.

Research into flotation-REST has reported promising outcomes for stress and anxiety, but the evidence isn't strong enough to present floating as a cure. See the 2025 systematic review.

Your personal preference probably matters more than a marketing claim about which method is “deeper.”

Which is better after exercise?

If you have muscular soreness or simply enjoy bodywork, massage may appeal. If you feel mentally overloaded and want a passive rest experience, floating might be a better match.

Neither is a replacement for medical care, rehabilitation, or a sensible training routine. If you have an injury, ask your healthcare professional what is appropriate.

Why not do both?

This is the nice part: you don't have to choose.

A Float + Massage session combines hands-on bodywork with quiet time in buoyant water. At Simple Float, you can enjoy them in either order.

Some people prefer massage first so they enter the float relaxed. Others like floating first and following it with massage. There's no scientifically established best order for everyone.

Try one, then the other. You may discover your own preference, which gives you something interesting to discuss for about thirty seconds before returning to blissful silence.

What should first-time visitors book?

Choose floating if novelty, quiet and weightlessness interest you most. Choose massage if you're looking for a familiar hands-on experience. Choose Float + Massage if you'd like a longer, unhurried session that combines both.

At Simple Float in Village Mall, Jumeirah 1, our team can explain the options before you buy.

No wrong answers. Just different kinds of rest.
